Nevermind if you do not have your own design as we have our collection for you to choose from. You might have purchased or downloaded lots of e-books and wanted to print it out simply because you prefer to read from a paper book rather than an e-book. Printing of e-books is easy, open up your pdf reader and hit print. your printer will start printing. and now your have a 400 pages with 400 single sided page book. You realized that the book is bulky and heavy, you will hardly read it. You should have printed it both side. The next time you print an e-book,open up the pdf reader as usual, before you hit the print button, you select print both side option, now you have a 400 pages with 200 double sided page book. It is much lighter, then you realized that the page number is always hidden in the middle of the book. Make it hard to find a page. If you have noticed, most of the books will have the odd page number printed on the right side of the page and the even page number printed on the left side of the page. this is to ease of searching for a page. Of course some of the books will have the pages printed in the center of the page, here you will not have the above problem. So how can you make sure that the page number is printed on the correct side? Just remember this. Always start printing with the odd page number, and you will not get it wrong. If page number position is not important to you, perhaps what is important to you is the weight. Then you can have several options here 1. Print on a smaller size paper. PDF allows you to print a page into the paper size that you choose. Printing an ebook in B5 size will be much lighter to carry then a full size A4 book, yet the size of the word will not be too small for reading.. you can try that. 2. Choose the option of 2up or 4up,you will have 2 pages or 4 pages printed on the same side. This will greatly reduce the paper used but at the same time the text maybe too small for reading. So you might wan to test print a few pages before you go for the entire book. 3. Print and bind section by section. You may choose to split the printing into few sections and bind it separately,so you don’t have to carry the entire book every time you need it. I hope the above information does help in your future ebook printing. Do leave us comments if you have further ideas. A poster is a visual presentation of information and is used to communicate an idea or to attract attention. Before you starts to sketch out a design,it is crucial to select the correct paper size. Make sure you know the dimensions of the space available. Material usage will largely depends on where the poster will be hung, whether its outdoor or indoor. Secondly, consider how far away the reader/viewer will be when they are looking at the poster –will your poster be on the back of a toilet door perhaps in which case you will have a fairly focus audience! or on the other hand,if it needs to attract attention from afar then you will need to give greater consideration to the layout and font sizes. Next consider your message. Are you simply trying to communicate information, stimulate further conversation, advertise your services or demonstrate your capabilities. Don’t try and do too much –pick one theme and stick to it. An effective posters ones that engage with the audience, capture a moment of their life and thereby instigate a reaction. You could do this by posing a question, using emotions to either make them laugh, smile, empathise or sympathise,or create something so shocking they will look back twice. Another method which may be use is creating a series of posters that tells a story over time therefore building a relationship with your audience. Getting the headline right is one of the most important parts of the poster. Don’t go for anything too long otherwise it won’t be memorable –in fact one word headlines can be the most dramatic. Alternatively you may use images to convey your messages. As the old saying goes –a picture paints a thousand words. Thus it is important that you have the right balance between the colour combinations, images usage and typography. For an example, red on blue doesn’t work well and red and green in close proximity could cause problems for people with colour blindness. Make sure your fonts are clearly legible on the colourbackground from a distance. Remember no one is really looking for your poster or the information it contains so you need to go out of your way to make it eye-catching and obvious ! Don’t cram your poster with too much information –less is definitely more:background space is as much part of the poster design as the content itself. It is ok to leave some white space. Infact, incorporate those white spaces as part of your design.Prioritise the information on the poster so that the most important information makes the most impact either by font, size or colour and then work your way down in order of importance. Consider using arrows or other symbols to direct the eye to the next piece of information. Graphic editor,Vector editor, desktop publishing and office suit software are becoming more and more powerful and sophisticated. These software are so powerful that you can’t do your work without them. These software have their own file format and the files created contain lots of information needed for the software to manipulate. Now that you have done your art work, and ready to send to your local printer for printing. You saved your file in your USB and bring it to your local printer, then you find that your local printer is using an older (or newer) version of the software and some of your design work did not turn out properly. (Yes,sometimes a newer version of the software can’t open the older version file properly). Your local printer will try very hard to keep their software updated, but sometimes it is just not feasible (especially the cost) to maintain all the versions. What should you do? The best file format and most welcome by your local printer are file format that are simple and without all the additional information stored by the sophisticated software. So what are these file formats? The most simple format will be graphic format such as JPEG,GIF,PNG,TIFF,etc. You will not have any problem printing when you bring these files for your local printer. You may also eliminate the fonts problem where your local printer do not have the font type that you are using. (you may refer to our previous post on fonts). Please note that graphic file such as .psd,.psp,.xcf,.ai,etc are programs with specific file format, additional information are saved. By now,you must be asking how can I save my word documents,or presentation slides, or my spreadsheet into graphic format? The answer is you don’t! For these type of documents you can convert it into PDF. PDF is one of the most portable document and one of the most welcome file format by your local printer. You can read more about PDF in our previous post here and how to convert here. Even if your local printer has the exact same version of your software, you are also advised to convert your art work into graphic or PDF format. This is because those sophisticated software may take longer time to open and it will slow down the printing process. I hope this will help you and do leave us comments if you have other solution as well. Very often when we browse the net,we will come across some information that we may want to save and print it out for reference. The easiest way of course will be to cut and paste it (CTRL+A then CTRL+V) to a word processor or a text editor. The problem with this method is sometimes it doesn’t format it the way it is from the browser. So you will need to find another way. Print Screen –Pressing the print screen button will capture whatever in your screen to a clipboard and you can paste it to other application. If you only required specific window, you can press ALT+print screen to only capture the active window. Then you paste it to a word processor or any graphic programs. The image captured will be exactly the same as you view it on screen. The problem with this method is,if your document is more than one page, you will need to capture it several times (page by page) and combine it later for printing. It can be time consuming,if the web page is long. Save as *.MHT –This is saving the webpage into a single archive file. it only save the necessary information for future viewing. You will still required to have internet access in order to view the content of the files in future. This is only recommended if you are always connected and uses only IE. Save as HTML (complete) –This option will allow you to save all the web pages and also the images required to view it locally. You do not need to have a internet access to view it in future. This option will use up additional storage space to store the text and images. A better solution will be using the print engine to generate a single file document such as below. Print to Microsoft XPS Document Writer –The XPS Document Writer allows you to create .xps files using any program that you run on Windows. You can view them on any computer where an XPS viewer is installed. How to use this writer, you may find it in here. Learn more about XPS viewer here. Print to PDF –Another popular way of saving your webpage into a document is by printing it to a PDF writer. There are several freeware and open source PDF writer that you can download for free, you may refer to our previous post here. Print to PDF is easy, once you have the software installed, you can simply print anything to PDF just like you print to printer. Print to PDF is highly recommended because it can be view on not only windows system, but Mac,Linux and any other that have a PDF viewer. If you have any other ideas,we welcome you to share with us here.. Too Many FontsWith the availability of a variety of typefaces/fonts,we are spoilt with choice. Finding the monotonous of using a single typeface in a document or an artwork we tend to throw in a wide variety of fonts. Here more does not means better. Infact it makes the document or artwork look amateurish. Stick to two or three is good enough. Type in ALL CAPSTYPING IN ALL CAPS is considered shouting and is frowned on in most cases. It is even worse when it is done with decorative or script typefaces. It’s ugly. It’s hard to read. Just don’t do it,PLEASE! Overuse of Frames and BoxesExcessive Use of Clip ArtCut the clip art clutter. Clip art is wonderful, abundant, and fun to use. It can spice up fliers, newsletters, and posters. However too many pictures on a page make it hard for the reader to concentrate on what the documents says. Use them with moderation and with purpose. Use them only if they supports your article or illustrates a point. Use Less Clip Art | |
